At the Clarke Central JV Baseball game this evening I noticed something that I like a lot. I saw that one player kept looking at the coaches area in the dugout more that usual. I realized he was not looking at Coach Perno but a young lady sitting next to coach Perno. She was conversing using sign language with the player. This young man was a good player. He made a hit every time he was at bat and made two of Clarke Central’s runs and is hearing impaired. I found out that this young man and his teacher were from the school I taught at Burney Harris Lyons Middle School.
A popular discussion lately on the state and National levels is funding for special education. Just this one little view reminds me how important special education is and how Clarke County School system gets it right. No, I am not thinking that this young man will be a pro baseball player but that he finds something he really enjoys that will keep him focused on school. This young man is getting a opportunity that he would not have it was left up to some state and national lawmakers. I am proud of this young man, his teacher, his coach, BHL middle school and the Clarke County School system. WE need to elect people who care about everybody.
