Damage in the Greater Ottumwa Park was centered on the playground. A large tree, already showing signs of stress, fell directly on top of the old-school hamster wheel.
Ottumwa Parks Director Gene Rathje told Ottumwa Radio News that the a final decision has not yet been made, but that the city was unlikely to replace or repair the classic piece of playground equipment.
Rathje cited difficulties finding parts for the wheel and the fact that it was custom built in the first place as obstacles the city must overcome if the they decides to replace the wheel.
